Um Kalthoum – Merch Illustration

This modern illustration of Um Kalthoum was designed for Enab-Berlin, bringing Levantine creations to Germany. Aimed at engaging youthful, party-loving audiences, the design features a playful element: Um Kalthoum is depicted saying “اسقنيها” (“Iskiniha”), which translates to “to water something, or, someone in dire need of something.” The phrase references a famous song that both Um Kalthoum and Asmahan wanted to perform, though it was ultimately recorded by Asmahan. The design’s adaptability across various merchandise was a creative challenge; it needed to be simple yet dynamic, avoiding overly square or monotonous shapes to ensure visual appeal on diverse products.
